Those other M&A candidates began getting bid up, but as it turns out, no more meaningful buyouts materialized in the diabetes space.

After forest fires forced Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  ) to temporarily idle its Wabush Scully iron ore mine in eastern Canada on June 28 following an emergency evacuation of the region, the miner said it was able to restart the mine yesterday and that it's fully operation once again.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of CenturyLink (CTL) have dropped more than 2% today on reports that it’s trying to buy cloud-computing company Rackspace Hosting (RAX).

    ZUMAPRESS.com

Bloomberg has the details on the potential transaction:

CenturyLink has discussed the idea with San Antonio-based Rackspace, which last month said it is still conducting an internal review of its strategic options, according to the people, who asked not to be identified talking about private information. One person said a deal may not be reached for the company, which had a stock-market valuation of $5.33 billion at the end of last week.

Citigroup’s Michael Rollins thinks a deal will depend on valuation:

Valuation matters. We believe CenturyLink can financially digest a possible acquisition of Rackspace under $50 per share based on our scenario analysis. We believeCenturyLink could pay forRackspace using up to 50% in cash to keep net debt financial leverage near or below 3x on our pro forma analysis. While PF FV/OIBDA may not move substantially paying up to $50/share, we estimate FCF/share and norm. EPS could be diluted by up to (11%) in the first year. Based on our initial analysis, we would take a neutral view for a possible buyout under $40 per share, but believeCenturyLink shares could trade lower if it were to pay more than $50 for Rackspace. We remain Neutral on CenturyLink largely based on valuation.

Shares of CenturyLink have dropped 2.2% to $40.55 at 1:18 p.m., while Rackspace has gained 5% to $39.10.

Top Long Term Companies To Own In Right Now

China has been the talk of the markets this week. Monday's news that Chinese banks were facing a cash crunch sent the Shanghai Composite down 5.3% and both European and U.S. markets followed suit. But on Tuesday, China's central bank appeared to shore up some financial institutions with liquidity and both the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) and S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) were primed for a recovery. By the end of the week, both the Dow and S&P 500 were up.

China makes the world go round
The reason markets are so concerned about Chinese banks is the impact the country has on the global economy. While the U.S. has been stuck with anemic growth and Europe has been in a recession, China has been growing at nearly double digits since the financial crisis.

A liquidity crisis in China right now may look very similar to the one in the U.S. in late 2008. If rates rise too quickly, the housing market could collapse, businesses would stop investing, and growth could quickly turn into contraction. Housing is particularly concerning because many have predicted a bubble in Chinese housing and the government has been taking efforts to curb the rise in home prices. Home prices are up double digits in China over the past year, a rate that's unsustainable long term. The housing boom is like kindling in a financial crisis.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Radovsky]

Clearwire's (NASDAQ: CLWR  ) largest minority stockholder, Crest Financial, is still urging other shareholders to vote against Sprint Nextel's (NYSE: S  ) proposed buyout of their company, even after Sprint raised its bid, according to Crest's filing with the SEC late yesterday.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

DISH's move is especially interesting in light of its having gotten into the middle of Sprint's ongoing attempts to buy out longtime partner Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR  ) , as well. Back in January, DISH made a rival bid for Clearwire as a way to get critical spectrum and LTE network infrastructure without having to build it from scratch. A bigger purchase of Sprint outright would give DISH the same benefits, albeit with a much larger financial commitment.

Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term. The announcement removed fears that a continued rise in interest rates may stall the economic recovery, as seen by the market's negative reaction to the sharp rise in the 10-year Treasury rate in August of 2013. Investors were also comforted by improving fundamentals both domestically and abroad. The Eurozone may finally be emerging from its prolonged recession and a number of economic reports in the U.S. continue to show progress. Specifically, initial unemployment claims dropped to a multiyear low early in September and the housing market continued to improve, as evidenced by prices rising 12.4 percent year-over year, which along with the stock market's strength, has created a positive wealth effect for consumers. In response to this general economic improvement, consumer confidence increased at the end of September, and the index of leading economic indicators ticked up as well, suggesting that, absent the effects of politics, the recovery in the real economy was continuing. The big challenge that Marvell has had to face going back well beyond the past quarter is the decline on the PC side of its business. In particular, Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC  ) and Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX  ) have been at the forefront of consolidation in the hard-drive industry, buying up operations from former rivals and thereby concentrating Marvell's exposure to a shrinking number of players in the space. Yet both Western Digital and Seagate have had to look to create hybrid solid-state/hard-disk drives to stay competitive with pure solid-state drives. If either company decides that Marvell's controller chips aren't necessary, it would have a huge impact on Marvell's overall business.

On the other hand, IBM seems to be focusing in its most promising businesses and is willing to sell those segments that are not compelling from a ROIC standpoint. A great example of this is IBM's recent agreement to sell the company's x86 server business to Lenovo (LNVGY) for approximately $2.3 billion ($2.0 billion in cash and $300 million in Lenovo stock) or 0.5 times 2013 sales. On top of the cash and stock price, around 7,500 IBM employees shall be hired by Lenovo.

You can be a video gamer, a PC user, or even a home entertainment watcher without using one of Logitech (NASDAQ: LOGI) products.

The company develops and markets hardware and software products that enable or enhance digital navigation, music and video entertainment, gaming, social networking, and audio and video communication over the Internet.

The company stock has risen by 16 percent so far this year. In January, Logitech announced etter than expectedsales of $628 million for the third quarter, up 2 percent on a year-over-year basis. Cash flow was way up, and earnings per share of $0.30 was up compared to a loss one year earlier.

The retail numbers tell the real story, with the company combined retail growth categories up 62 percent, year-over-year. Tablet peripheral salaries were up 95 percent; audio wearables and wireless sales were up 79 percent; and video gaming sales rose by 25 percent in the same time period.

Those are numbers that are manna from heaven for a company that really needed them, after a 30-month period of mediocre performance from 2010-to-mid-2013 that saw LOGU share price fall stagnate in the $8-$10-per-share range.

ee pleased by our solid Q3 performance, with both sales and profit growth, notes Bracken P. Darrell, Logitech chief executive officer. ee encouraged by the robust sales in our growth categories, as well as the success of our ongoing initiatives to improve profitability.”

Going forward, Logitech has upped its yearly outlook, calling for sales of $2.1 billion, up from $2 billion in its last outlook. Non-GAAP operating income should rise to $125 million, up from $100 million previously.

Why the continued optimism over Logitech, after two-and-half years of tepid performance?
