There a few holidays quite like Thanksgiving. I mean when else do we regularly get a day off toward the middle of the work week, surround ourselves with family and friends, and gorge ourselves with a dozen different types of food until our pants no longer fit? And for me, as a sports lover, I get to watch my Detroit Lions play, which has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition.

But Thanksgiving also has its negative connotation for being the holiday, or the start of the holiday season, that tends to pack on unwanted pounds for millions of Americans. It's no surprise that New Year's resolutions commonly entail losing the weight put on during the roughly five- or six-week holiday season, which begins on Thanksgiving.

With 35.7% of the nation considered obese already according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of the nation considered overweight or obese according to standard Body Mass Index calculations, and the obesity officially classified as a disease by the American Medical Association, obesity awareness is growing right along with our waistlines. Thankfully, the number of companies creating product lines, services, or drugs to help us battle the bulge this holiday season is also increasing.

General MillsFrute Brute and Yummy Mummy will return to the shelves this fall with an updated look. The Mummy rises again. That would be Fruity Yummy Mummy, to be exact. The "monster cereal" was discontinued by General Mills back in 1992, but the company announced this week that it will bring it back for Halloween. Another discontinued cereal, Frute Brute, will also rise again for the first time since it left shelves back in 1982. They'll join three other monster cereals that still haunt the shelves: Frankenberry, Boo Berry and Count Chocula. (Count Chocula, like its namesake, is evidently immortal.) But all five will receive updated box art to reflect a more modern cartoon style than the original 1970s versions. (Think less "Superfriends," more "Frankenweenie.") For fans of the original look, though, we've got good news: Target (TGT) will exclusively carry "retro" packaging of the cereals, which are sure to become collector's items and flood eBay (EBAY) in the months to come. General Mills says the cereals will roll out select retailers "soon," with nationwide distribution coming in early September. Unfortunately, the company says it will be a "seasonal, limited time run," so we recommend stocking up if you find yourself falling in love with Fruit Brute all over again. Here's hoping that this starts a trend of General Mills (GIS), Post (POST) and other companies bringing back their old discontinued cereals. My favorite cereal growing up was Big Mix, which had raisins and panoply of grains, and whose mascot was some unholy creature combining the features of a moose, wolf, chicken and pig. And who could forget such discontinued classics as French Toast Crunch or Pop-Tarts Crunch? If you feel like taking a walk down memory lane, let us know in the comments which discontinued cereal you'd love to eat again.

Top 10 Retail Companies To Watch In Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO  ) finished down 10% Friday after the teen-focused clothing retailer posted a weak quarterly earnings report.

So what: Aeropostale reported a per-share loss of $0.16 during the seasonally slow quarter, a penny better than analysts had predicted. Perhaps more concerning, overall revenue fell 9%, though that also topped analyst projections, and same-store sales tumbled 14%. The company blamed clearance markdowns from the holiday season for the revenue drop and also said colder-than-normal weather kept shoppers away. Guidance for the current quarter was lower than expected at a loss of $0.20-$0.15, versus a consensus of a loss of $0.06, indicating that the turnaround plan is not going as hoped.

Now what: The teen clothing market is notoriously fickle, and brand loyalty can change in a flash. A 14% drop in comparable sales would normally be alarming, but I'd wait to see the full year's results before assuming that pattern will hold. Rival Abercrombie & Fitch shares were off 8% after a similarly dismal quarter, so this may have just been a result of industrywide pressures. To stay up to date on the latest Aeropostale news, add the company to your Watchlist here.

The folks who originally said Eddie Lampert — hedge fund manager, major SHLD shareholder, and now acting Sears CEO — was mostly viewing Sears Holdings as a real estate play have since been vindicated. In addition to the spinoff of Orchard Supply Hardware (OSHWQ) in 2011 and last year’s spinoff of the relatively successful Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores (SHOS), Lampert is now finally getting serious about shedding SHLD department store units. Last year he sold or closed 46 of the company’s 1,300 or so full-line mall stores, vs. letting go of less than 10 in any year since he became a major shareholder back in 2006.

Top Up And Coming Companies To Own In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Discover Financial Services (DFS) was the winner among major U.S. banks on Monday, with shares rising 2% to close at $52.81.

The broad indices strengthened late in the trading session, on the 14th day of the partial shutdown of the federal government. After Republican leaders in the House of Representatives late last week met with President Obama but failed to come to an agreement, Senate leaders have been working toward a compromise for the government to resume full operations and for an increase in the $16.7 trillion debt limit.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has repeatedly warned that the government could run out of money to pay its bills by Oct. 17, without an increase to the debt limit, although some analysts have said the government could probably go on operating until the end of October.

Fairchild Semiconductor (FCS) wasn't fit as a fiddle at the close of 2013. Feeble orders from Samsung (SSNLF), one of its biggest customers, kept Fairchild down, and it was not able to take advantage of its supplier relationship with Apple (AAPL).

In an epochal paper published in Electronics magazine on April 19, 1965 and simply titled "Cramming more components onto integrated circuits," Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) director of research Gordon E. Moore wrote (emphasis mine):

  • [By Alex Planes]

The Atari 2600 launched at a cost of $199 (equal to about $750 today) in the fall of 1977. The console's first two years on the market almost sent it the way of the Osyssey, since Atari managed to sell less than one million units by the end of 1978. However, Fairchild Semiconductor's (NYSE: FCS  ) decision to abandon console gaming in 1979 (it had actually beaten Atari to market with the Channel F in 1976, but sold fewer units than the 2600), coupled with the launch of a Space Invaders cartridge for the 2600 in 1980, gave Atari a clear path to huge sales. Two years later, the 2600 had reached ten million households, and console gaming had a foothold. Atari was briefly the crown jewel in Warner's entertainment empire, but this success wouldn't last.

H&R Block (NYSE: HRB  ) will release its quarterly report on Tuesday, and as you'd expect outside of tax season, the tax-preparation company will almost certainly post a sizable loss. To take advantage of UAN's better pricing, CF smartly cut down on urea to scale up UAN production during the last quarter. The capability to flex production mix according to market conditions is among CF's biggest strengths. UAN is a high-margin product, so focusing on it makes sense. In its last quarter, UAN specialist CVR Partners (NYSE: UAN  ) converted 72% of ammonia produced to UAN. If that sounds incredible, there's more. From 80,700 tons of ammonia, CVR churned out a whopping 196,200 tons of UAN.

Advisors' Opinion:

The short, sucky answer? A lot:

Plans for a igafactorymeant to produce millions of electric-car batteries ginned up excitement, but also raised eyebrows. The Wall Street Journal reported on skepticism in the space — including from heads at Volkswagen (VLKAY) and battery maker Highpower International (HPJ). Now, even planned investment partner Panasonic (PC) now sounds iffy on the project, with company Kazuhiro Tsuga saying “the investment risk is definitely larger.” Not good. There also was Tesla direct sales snafu. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie huffed and puffed and (on March 11) successfully blew down Tesla direct sales model, with the Motor Vehicle Commission approving a measure to enforce an already-existing ban on direct sales. On the flip side, Tesla has scored victories in New York and Ohio in the past month, and is making progress in Arizona (which has a little incentive on the board). Production of the Model X has been pushed further back, to 2015. Musk’s reasons — mostly having to do with focusing on bolstering Model S sales — are valid, but that doesn really soften the blow of a longer wait for the much-anticipated addition to Tesla line. To address the issue of battery fires in the Model S, TSLA added titanium shields and aluminum deflector plates to new vehicles and offered to install them for free in all its existing cars. Tesla margins are excellent, and there no hard number on the cost impact of the fix, but titanium ain cheap. This definitely isn going to add to Tesla bottom line. What Now?

I won belabor you with my bullish position on TSLA stock, but if you want, you can see it here. In short, Musk is a genius; Tesla products are quality and appeal to (and are priced for) the all-important luxury segment; and just given size and scale, TSLA has oh-so-much room to grow.

And if you thought this crack team would look only at internal promotion candidates, headhunter firm Heidrick & Struggles (NASDAQ: HSII  ) is there to vet the field of outsider candidates. It's a high-profile contract for Heidrick, but the stock fell 0.7% today anyhow. The lack of popping champagne corks in the company's Chicago headquarters is an indication of just how tough this recruitment drive will be.

Could this be the real deal this time? There's no denying that InvenSense has pretty solid technology, particularly as Samsung -- which typically uses the best components it can find -- has so extensively used InvenSense's products. That said, the iPhone 5s used the following MEMS components:

Three-axis accelerometer from Bosch Sensortech Three-axis gyroscope from STMicroelectronics (STM) Three-axis electronic compass from AKM

For InvenSense to displace Bosch (which managed to wrestle away the accelerometer socket from STMicroelectronics) and/or STMicroelectronics over at Apple, it is going to have to present a pretty compelling value proposition. Whether it can do so only the tear-downs will tell,! but it is surprising -- particularly given how compelling InvenSense's products seem to be -- that the company hasn't won an iPhone socket to date.

Additionally, Wendy’s can use some of the cash freed up by the franchise model to invest in advertising and marketing, and that should boost customer traffic.

HardAssetsInvestor: Are institutional investors still interested in gold? I ask because assets in ETFs like GLD are still declining to new multiyear lows, even this week.

Kevin Feldman: I think there were two very large macro risks that a lot of institutional investors perceived coming out of the [2008/2009] financial crisis. The first was that quantitative easing would lead to inflationary effects. The second one came in 2011, with all the risks related to concerns about the eurozone breakup.

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they're in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn't much different than the real thing. Banking and managing money isn't what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking. That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. You can be a video gamer, a PC user, or even a home entertainment watcher without using one of Logitech (NASDAQ: LOGI) products.

The company develops and markets hardware and software products that enable or enhance digital navigation, music and video entertainment, gaming, social networking, and audio and video communication over the Internet.

The company stock has risen by 16 percent so far this year. In January, Logitech announced etter than expectedsales of $628 million for the third quarter, up 2 percent on a year-over-year basis. Cash flow was way up, and earnings per share of $0.30 was up compared to a loss one year earlier.

The retail numbers tell the real story, with the company combined retail growth categories up 62 percent, year-over-year. Tablet peripheral salaries were up 95 percent; audio wearables and wireless sales were up 79 percent; and video gaming sales rose by 25 percent in the same time period.

Those are numbers that are manna from heaven for a company that really needed them, after a 30-month period of mediocre performance from 2010-to-mid-2013 that saw LOGU share price fall stagnate in the $8-$10-per-share range.

ee pleased by our solid Q3 performance, with both sales and profit growth, notes Bracken P. Darrell, Logitech chief executive officer. ee encouraged by the robust sales in our growth categories, as well as the success of our ongoing initiatives to improve profitability.”

e still have more work ahead, but our turnaround is on track as we continue to build a faster and more profitable Logitech,he adds.

Going forward, Logitech has upped its yearly outlook, calling for sales of $2.1 billion, up from $2 billion in its last outlook. Non-GAAP operating income should rise to $125 million, up from $100 million previously.

Why the continued optimism over Logitech, after two-and-half years of tepid performance?
